Spicy Crispy Tofu

Ingredients:

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable or sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (for a vegan option)
  • 1–2 tablespoons chili garlic sauce (adjust based on your spice tolerance)
  • Sesame seeds and chopped cilantro (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tofu:
Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels, and place a heavy object on top. Allow it to press for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Cut and Coat:
After pressing, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes. In a bowl, toss the tofu with cornstarch, ensuring each piece is evenly coated.
  3. Pan-Fry to Perfection:
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes to the pan and cook until they develop a golden, crispy crust on all sides. This should take about 6–8 minutes.
  4. Sauté the Aromatics:
Push the tofu to one side of the skillet and add the minced garlic and ginger. Stir and sauté for about 30 seconds, or until their aroma fills the air.
  5. Whisk the Sauce:
In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey (or maple syrup), and chili garlic sauce. Mix until smooth and well-blended.
  6. Bring It All Together:
Pour the sauce over the tofu and stir gently to coat each piece. Allow the tofu to simmer in the sauce for 1–2 minutes, letting it thicken slightly and cling to the tofu.
  7. Garnish and Serve:
Transfer the tofu to a serving dish and garnish with sesame seeds and fresh cilantro. Pair it with steamed rice or your favorite side for a deliciously satisfying meal.
