Ingredients
For the Yogurt Sauce:
- 1 (8-ounce) container plain yogurt
- 1⁄3 cup cucumber, seeded and finely chopped (reserve the rest, thinly sliced, for garnish)
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 teaspoon sugar
For the Filling:
- 1 lb lean ground beef (or substitute ground turkey)
- 1 1⁄2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt (optional)
- 3⁄4 teaspoon black pepper
For Assembling:
- 4 pita breads
- 3 cups shredded lettuce
- 1 large tomato, chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
Instructions
1. Prepare the Yogurt Sauce
- In a mixing bowl, combine the yogurt, finely chopped cucumber, onion, minced garlic, and sugar.
- Stir until smooth and well blended.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or for best results, overnight. This allows the flavors to develop fully.
2. Season the Meat
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef (or turkey) with oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the seasonings.
3. Shape and Cook
- Divide the seasoned meat mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties.
- Grill the patties over medium-high heat for 10-12 minutes, turning once, until cooked through and no longer pink.
- Alternative cooking methods: Use a toaster oven, broiler, or skillet if grilling isn’t an option.
- Once cooked, slice the patties into thin strips.
4. Assemble the Gyros
- Warm the pita breads until soft and pliable.
- Fill each pita with a portion of the sliced meat.
- Top with shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, sliced cucumber, and onion.
5. Serve
- Drizzle generously with the chilled yogurt sauce.
- Serve immediately and enjoy the vibrant flavors of this Mediterranean-inspired dish!
